The North and South bowls on the 3rd mountain (the outback) are the most accessible of the 5 Keystone bowls. From the top of the outback lift, you can easily walk just 5 minutes to a ridge you can see the top of and then ski down left (North) or right (South). The south is generally easier. The North is steeper if you turn directly left and ski in just beyond the rope, and gets gentler the farther you go around the bowl. Both bowls require a pretty long cat-walk to get back to the lift, but it's generally downhill, so not much pushing required (even for boarders).

If you want to get up higher, or don't like the walk, there is a $5/ride snow cat that takes about a dozen people up about 1,000 ft higher than is easily hikable to get some above tree-line turns and to get to the farther and easier reaches of the bowls.

The other 3 bowls (independance, bergman and erickson) are a pretty steady and long hike. usually they are a one run/day type of an adventure. hike up, ski a long run down and take the lift back home. Keystone also offers cat skiing for about $280/day including all day skiing and about a dozen trips up and down and a gourmet lunch served in a wood-warmed yurt in the bottom of the Independence Bowl. it is an AWESOME DAY that you won't ever forget. well worth the expense. Only 12 people go on the trip each day with a driver and 2 guides. All avalanche gear and training is provided and avalanche control is done every day in all 5 bowls for safety. High-end Powder skis are even provided. Only very experienced skiers should go on this trip of semi-extreme terrain. You should be very comfortable in trees and knee-deep powder and jumping off cornices to get into the bowls (particularly in bergman and intependance bowls).

The skiing in these areas at Keystone is some of the finest bowl skiing anywhere in colorado and are places that few Keystone skiiers and riders ever see.
